TAPE BACKUP LAUNCH TARGETS GROWING BUSINESSES

From STORAGE Magazine Vol 7, Issue 1 - February 2007

Breece Hill has unveiled two new entries in the market for backup technologies for small and medium-sized businesses that are poised to take advantage of the need for high-capacity, low-maintenance data storage

The Linear Tape Open (LTO) Ultrium tape format - an established and proven technology - serves as the basis for the new Q16 autoloader and Q40 library launched by Breece Hill. And it's very much emerging businesses that the company has in its sights.

The entry-level Q16 provides a single drive with two eight cartridge magazines to deliver up to 12.8TB capacity in a compact, 2U device for unattended 'hands-free' backup operations appropriate for small businesses.

Meanwhile, mid-sized environments look set to benefit from the Q40's space-efficient 4U rack-mountable design, with a 40-cartridge capacity of up to 32
terabytes. To provide for future growth, the Q40 design allows users to start with a single tape drive and 24 slots, and add a second drive and 24 slots when capacity and performance requirements increase along with data loads.

"At a time when others in our market are undergoing consolidation, product and channel confusion, Breece Hill is expanding its product line," states Robert Schaefer, CEO, Breece Hill. "We are furthering our commitment to customers and solution providers struggling to keep a handle on the changing conditions. The Q16 and Q40 come with our company pedigree of competitive pricing, high quality and creative approaches to solving storage problems specifically for the SMB market."

The Q16 and Q40 have been thoroughly tested, says the company, and are certified to work with industry-leading servers, operating systems and backup software. Both products are available as standard, with a SCSI LVD interface, barcode reader and network-based management capabilities. Tape cartridges are stored in removable magazines for bulk loading of media and provide a convenient storage unit for transporting media offsite. Each magazine may be removed separately or all at once by the LCD panel on the front, eliminating the need to take the unit offline to insert or eject cartridges.

The Q16 and Q40 provide expansion capability for Breece Hill's backup/recovery, compliance and archiving appliances, extending tape storage capacity of its data protection solutions. Designed for 100% field serviceability, the products are backed by a three-year return-to-factory warranty.

With the addition of the Q16 and Q40, Breece Hill is looking to enhance its position in the highly competitive environment of innovative data protection. The company has focused on the SMB market for well over a decade and says it will continue to offer high-end data protection capabilities previously available only to large companies and enterprises.
