Scan-Copy-Print

Wide format printers still figure extensively in the CAD and GIS markets. To this end, Epson has enhanced the capabilities of two printers in the SureColor range with the addition of a scanner

Despite the increase in mobile applications, with contractors taking building information on- site as 3D digital models, there is still a requirement for large format printed output. To give just a couple of instances, local planning offices still haven't fully taken on board the use of 3D models for sending in planning applications, notwithstanding the need to have suitable suites of software to hand to cope with the variety of formats that such applications might be delivered in. Architects and designers also need the latest colour printing devices to display their projects to both clients and team members.

It's not just output that needs to be considered. A lot of current construction work involves the refurbishment of buildings, replete with piles of legacy drawings that not only show how the building evolved, but which can usefully be scanned for incorporation into the new modelling environment.

This has led to Epson adding a 36-inch wide colour scanner to two of their CAD/GIS printers, the 36-inch SureColor SC-5200 and the 44-inch SC-7200, to produce MFP versions: the SureColor SC-T7200MFP and SC-T5200MFP models. These are the first Epson large-format printers to come with a scanner, giving users the flexibility to digitise large-format hard copies and either scan-to-file, scan-to-email or scan-to-share with other SC-T printers.

Coupled with the superior performance of the printers, scanning and printing an A1 document - without having to use an intervening PC, as the whole Scan to Print operation is purely device managed - takes a mere 39 seconds.

The multifunction printers are also available in either single or double-roll configurations, depending on the printer’s configuration, and denoted by the D (double roll fed) or PS (Postscript) at the end of the model name.

The SureColor range comes in nine different models, each with numerous configurations, starting with the 24-inch SureColor SC-T3200 - the only one available with or without a stand, enabling it to be placed, if necessary, in the confined space of an onsite portacabin.

CAD and GIS printers are differentiated from graphics printers by the reduced set of colours (normally just 4) which are more than capable of handling all design, architectural, building, engineering, mapping and colour printing requirements. They are also used extensively in copy shops, offering powerful image processing and fast print speeds which provides maximum productivity and flexibility.

All of the SureColor range use Epson's PrecisionCore TFP printheads, with a print resolution of 2880dpi x 1440dpi, and UltraChrome XD pigment ink which delivers high quality output and precise, repeatable performance. The pigment, in addition to being more durable and fade resistant than dye-based inks, is also smudge and water resistant and delivers deep blacks and crisp, dense lines (ideal for technical graphics) and the vibrant colours necessary for high-quality prints and posters, on coated and non-coated media - including board up to 1.5mm thick. To match different operating needs (office or copyshop, for example) the printer has three sizes of ink cartridges available - 110, 350 and 700ml.

To handle large CAD and GIS files, the SureColor SC-T3200 comes with 1GB of RAM for ultra-fast image processing, and an optional 320GB HDD for job caching and recall. It also has optional PostScript support with dual 1.6GHz CPUs for printing large data-rich files quickly and directly from leading design and CAD programs. And as for speed, it can print an A1 drawing in just 28 seconds. With its sleek styling, compact footprint, low noise levels and front operation the SureColor SC-T3200 is designed to fit easily into an office environment.

SURECOLOR SC-T5200D
Next in line is the 36-inch SureColor SC-T5200D, the 'D' standing for Dual paper roll feeder. It is ideal for busy CAD and GIS environments, meeting the demand for maximum productivity and flexibility. Combined with the PrecisionCore TFP printheads, which won’t need replacing, and the Ultra-Chrome XD ink, the SC-T5200D delivers a higher level of performance, value and media support - making it an ideal printer for copyshops.

Maximising productivity further, the double rolls come with auto paper loading and auto switching between media - and they are front loaded. After all, if you are going to save space by putting your scanner on top of the printer, you don't want to have to position it three feet away from the wall just to feed it!
