The Green IT Awards are now a 'must-be-there' event for more and more businesses. 2013 marked their fourth year and already organisations are gearing themselves up to take part in 2014. For those who were at this year's event, here's a reminder of the highlights. For those who weren't, here’s a taster of what has made these awards such a winner

The Green IT Awards showcase and reward the technology, tools and solutions, as well as the companies and organisations, that have made a significant contribution to improving the IT industry's environmental performance over the past 12 months.

They have become a key happening in the industry calendar and the awards for 2013 - sponsored by iomart Hosting, the Department of Energy & Climate Change (DECC), BCS (The Chartered Institute for IT) and ReadSoft - fully lived up to that reputation. All of the finalists, chosen by you, our readers, and a distinguished panel of judges, were announced at the Winners' Ceremony on 9 May 2013 at the Grand Connaught Rooms, London, with more than 140 supporting guests gathered to see the outcome of the on-line voting and judging panel's deliberations.

BCS's Richard French, director of educational policy, spoke of his role championing digital literacy skills across all sectors of society, including schools, colleges, private and public sector organisations. BCS is the leading awarding body for a range of digital skills qualifications.

"The explosion of technology has transformed our society," he pointed out. "From the introduction of the PC, through to the web and now the growth of mobile and tablet technology, we all have to be able to manipulate technology on a daily basis. Having a sound understanding of how to use technology, whether it's inputting data, surfing the web, manipulating photos or creating documents, is vital. "

French is working with various bodies to ensure that digital skills education is high on the agenda. "As the government launches its digital strategy and promotes digital by default, it's really important that we support and enable all generations to gain the skills they need to access services, apply for jobs, and feel confident in the use of technology in all formats."

Sarah Fraser from Rainforest Concern spoke about the background to the actual awards that were being presented to the winners for 2013: the sponsorship of 1 acre of rainforest in The Choco Andean Rainforest Project in northwest Equador, so helping to preserve the biodiversity found in the region. There could hardly have been a more fitting tribute to the efforts of our winners. On which note, here are some of those who triumphed on the night:
